John McCain is a fine man – according to everything that I have read and heard about his life. He stands firm for his convictions and is not easily swayed by the winds of popular poles. But no matter how you spin the situation, John McCain is not a deep-seated conservative.
That means that in the upcoming Presidential election, true conservatives do NOT have a voice. It might be remedied by the choice of a strong conservative running mate for John McCain, but even that is no guarantee.
Because of the political process that is in place right now, hundreds and thousands of people will have no real voice in the 2008 Presidential election. Although there will likely be independent candidates from all walks of life, the winner will be chosen by the candidate with the most electoral votes – despite how the popular vote plays out.
The election process has needed repairs for several decades. The parties in charge (that would have to implement the changes) are likely more fearful of losing power than of doing what is right. It’s just a shame that the process can’t be fixed before too much damage is done.
Conservatives need a true voice in the 2008 election – they just may not get what they need.
