My gut reaction was (and still is to some extent) that a Christian can’t support a Mormon (or any other non-Christian). My debate partner disagreed. “If we truly believe that God is in charge then isn’t it possible for Him to change whoever is in office AND to use them in a good, positive way.”
Okay, I can see where he is coming from. But I don’t fully support the idea. I think that as a Christian I need to find the candidate that would best support and lift up the God that I believe in. IF another candidate wins, then it becomes my job to pray and support that new President because scripture tells me that no one gets into a place of leadership with out being ordained by God.
The real question will come after the primaries when the candidates are narrowed down to the two main parties and the independents. IF there are no Christians in the main parties then is it wise of me to throw my vote away with an independent vote. Let’s face it, with the way the electoral system is set up there is NO chance of a non-party candidate winning.
Should my vote be about conviction or about electability? Is it better to throw away my vote on a candidate that I think would make the best president or to let my vote count and vote for the lesser of two evils?
There is so much to think about over the next year and most of it I would rather not have to deal with in the first place.
